A fabulous footed antique Japanese cloisonne jar with a three-clawed
dragon encircling the jar's body. The dragon's long serpent-shaped body
is composed of a deep green cloisonne that is brought to life with gold
or copper flecks, while the dragon belly is a contrasting white. Deep
blue pointed fins add a spirited touch to his rolling topside as well
as the tail that stretches back and around, near the return to his
ominous open jaw.
Cobalt blue clouds float amidst the translucent
red enamel that covers a silver foil ground around the sides. The jar
top and lid are decorated with a beautiful cloisonne floral-type
pattern, with a foiled pigeon blood coloring again found at the base of
the bronze flower knob. The jar underside is finished in a cobalt
cloisonne pattern with one white flower at the center, while the jar
sits atop three small curved feet.

In very fine condition, there
is very little loss to the enamel work, and no dents or damage to the
jar's body or feet. (The photos were taken on a bright sunny day, so
there's a bit of glare due to the foil reflection.) I speculate the lid
was at one point dropped, as there's a small bruise-type crack in the
red enameling and the knob does not sit totally upright. (With gentle
care, it's likely you could reverse the slight lean in the knob.)

Jar measures 3-1/2" in diameter and 3-3/4" high to the knob. Circa 1900.

Standing 12-1/4" high, this vase is approximately 6-1/2" wide at the widest point. In great condition, with no nicks, chips, or cracks noted.

Comparing the mark to the later Chinese marks illustrated on Gotheborg, the mark is believed to read Qianlong Nian Zhi - Qianlong Period Make, with the vase actually dating to the 1970s.
